DIVINE TRAGEDY : 1977
Exhibition
March 27th-April 26th, Joyce Yahouda Gallery
(PAINTING, VIDEO, PHOTOGRAPHY, PERFORMANCE)
The Divine Tragedy is a tribute to the art and the life of Maria Callas.
Through paintings and drawings, Céline B. La Terreur depicts the “Divina” in all her grace and beauty, revealing her strength and passion, whether sublime or violent, as always being elegant.
This exhibition acts as a witness to the sincere admiration that Céline B. La Terreur, as the consecrated artist, has for Callas, the woman of a tragic destiny. The works in this exhibition were produced between 2005 and 2008, after a long research on Callas. During this period of time, Céline B. La Terreur obsessively observed and analyzed the myth of Callas, in order to produce a body of work that invites this exceptional woman into a contemporary dialog.
The paintings and drawings have been done in a classical style that is punctuated with abstract elements, making them royal and timeless, just like the Diva.

THE DIVINE TRAGEDY : VIDEO
Maria Callas, mother of heavy metal music ? Was she the “spiritual mother” – or perhaps, a cosmetic one, of Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe and other hairy divas of the rock ‘n’ roll scene ? This is the surprising yet convincing thesis defended by Céline B. La Terreur in her new exhibition, La Divine Tragédie.
After a long research on Callas, the paintings, drawings, photographs and video that are presented in this show demonstrate La Terreur’s fascination for this unforgettable diva. La Divine Tragédie is resting on the idea that there is physical resemblance between La Terreur and Callas, but also on the impudent appropriation that La Terreur takes on this mythical figure. Therefore, Céline B. La Terreur becomes the daughter-avatar of Callas, the incontestable heiress of a myth to whom she offers a tribute. The “Divina” never stops to die and to resuscitate in a series of romantic and tragic poses.
Playing the stunning game of multiple incarnations, Céline B. La Terreur is not losing an inch of her pride. She keeps us captives in a world where rock stars, divas and Doberman dogs find pleasure of the same ferocious attitude, of a cruel and excessive beauty.
